Surface Dressings

We clear and aerate the surface of the lawn and apply the dressing. The dressing consists of a mix of materials depending on the existing soil composition and health, such as sand, loam, topsoil or peat. Sand used does not contain lime and all ingredients are dry and sifted before use to remove any large clumps.

Before the top dressing can be applied we cut the grass to allow the dressing to penetrate the existing topsoil without causing damage to the grass. After cutting, we walk around the lawn raking and loosening bare patches.

Heavy Clay Soils are dug up prior to the winter to allow frosts to break up the clods. A dressing of gypsum, sand or horticultural grit to help produce a more crumbly soil.

Light Sandy Soils requires us to add bulky organic matter in spring. We use plenty of farmyard manure, garden compost or organic soil conditioner when planting to give moisture-holding material at root level. Mulch is applied in late spring to reduce evaporation and we recommend ground cover plants to shield the soil.

We layer the surface of the growing area with large amounts of Organic Matter (defined as all living and decaying residues, including weeds, crop residues, decaying roots, microorganisms and anything which is added to the soil in the form of composts, manures, cover crops, mulches, leaves, etc.)

We have a choice of modern products that help improve soil structure. Nevertheless, we would always encourage you to make your own compost (it’s easy once you get the hang of it) and this will help keep your garden soil in top condition.

Only the finest quality dressings and compost is supplied, to ensure your soil has the best possible base to grow on. We supply drerssings by the bag or in bulk, delivered direct to your location, anywhere, anytime.
